Love Song’s original title was This Is Not a Love Song (one of my favourite post-punk anthems from Public Image Ltd) because it’s about a girl who doesn’t want her life complicated by messy feelings for a boy. Nina is sensible, level-headed and calm. But that’s why more than one boy – famous boys, in fact – falls for her. And things get messy anyway. So yeah, there is a little bit of love, and a lot of songs. And
For the last six months I’ve been working on a new and exciting project, set in the art world. It’s my first historical novel, about a subject I’ve always adored, with a heroine who’s about to shake up Victorian London. Here’s the cover reveal … Click on the photo to find out more about it from my lovely publishers at Stripes. There will be gifs!
In the month that Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (not that he seems to have accepted it) I’m glad to be doing lots of things that celebrate music with writing. Tomorrow, I’ll be hosting The Sound of Music panel at YA Shot in Hillington, West London, with fellow writers Chris Russell, Marianne Levy and Eleanor Wood. Come and see us, and hear about our favourite festival mishaps and teenage heartthrobs, as well as why we love
I’ve been looking at my wardrobe (this is not uncommon) wondering what to wear. Festival time is here. Tomorrow I’ll be onstage at the Wychwood Festival in Cheltenham, and over the next few weeks I’ll be in Derby, Chichester, London for YALC, Scotland for Wigtown, Bath, the Isle of Wight and more, meeting up with other writers, talking about books, and best of all, meeting YOU. Readers. People who love a celebration – especially one that celebrates books. Which brings
As someone who tried to get published for ten years before my first book was launched, I’m always so excited for new writers. Especially writers I know. So I’m THRILLED and proud that one of my recent students has just published her first book. She is Camilla Chester, and her book is called Jarred Dreams. It was shortlisted in the National Literacy Trust New Author Prize 2015 in conjunction with Bloomsbury. I’ve just started to read it and can’t wait
The week that once seemed so far away has finally arrived! Love Song is officially launched on Thursday. Join me in celebrating by sharing your favourite video of a love song – and look out for some of mine. The blog tour starts on Friday, with the Overflowing Library. It’s been out in the wild for a little while already, and I’m excited that everyone seems to get Nina and her dream-like adventure with music and the hot, complicated
Every month, you’ll find me on Girls Heart Books, talking about writing. Yesterday, I wrote about the making of a book, from first idea to finished copy. You can read all about it here. Love Song has arrived at last – 20 author copies in a box from my publishers, and more on the shelves at Waterstones. I have even eaten Love Song themed cake. So it feels real. So exciting after so long. If you read it, let me
